Into the start of a new season, South Nottingham 4s lined up against a friendly Westleigh side at sunny Bingham.
Many of the south team were regular fours players, but we welcomed Adam B, Max B and Dylan R to support us.
The game was played in a friendly manner and all Batty and Ben W had to do umpiring-wise was to blow the whistle and all players respected the decisions – thanks to the umpires.
We were joined by a debutant player William F who showed future promise by doing what was required at the right time.
As captain Ken said at half-time - William F started a move which led to the break forward and the neat finish by Norman B who had a great game. 1:0 South.
Well done William.
Super Stan J made some incredible runs into spaces to receive well-placed balls and turn and drive forward or to drop the ball back and move into the next correct space. The goals will come with the work he’s putting in.
Zac R who is showing huge ability improvement bossed our midfield and linking up brilliantly with Stan. He seemed to pick up balls which would fly past others and he did something useful with them.
James F was all over midfield with a mixture of interceptions and distributional skills including the occasional aerial up to the attackers.
Some great defensive demonstrations by Greg C, Grahams J and M saw repeated forays towards South’s goal snuffed out and they regularly became launch-pads for South attacks.
Adam B played out of his skin to give a brilliant display of attacking defensive skills. His confidence level led to some really good forays up front.
Whenever the defensive line broke, Andy B kept the potential goals out like a pro.
Max B had an absolutely fantastic game and reached balls everyone else thought were lost. When on the ball, his decision making was spot-on and totally unselfish - a true team player who is developing at an incredible pace.
On one of these occasions, when one to one with their keeper, he completely unselfish ly passed the ball across to Ken S to finish. Ken repaid the favour and passed the ball back to him via the post and their keeper for him to slot home - 2:0 South.
The opportunity was taken after a complex series of substitutions to get young Elliott F onto the pitch at the same time as William and dad James F.
It was a great moment for South who pride ourselves on being a family friendly club. This made two dads and lads on the pitch which is great to see.
Elliott had a few opportunities to show his future potential which will be fully exploited as soon as he’s 12.
Dylan R joined us hot-foot from football for a welcomed cameo appearance. It was great to see him attacking their goal instead of in his normal role of defending ours.
For 99.9% of the game, our goal looked impregnable but after the final whistle was blown Westleigh converted a penalty corner making the final score 2:1 to South.
A great start performance to the season - well done all.
I was really proud to captain you all today
