Match Report

Doomed at Christmas with 4 points. Not even a die hard South supporter would have dared to dream relegation could be averted, and to be fair, most still thought today would go against us.  However, South have developed into a stubborn unit and they’d be damned if they weren’t going to make Newark get the results they needed to stay up.

On a glorious spring day, away at Players, they produced the goods to win 7-4 and left it up to Newark to determine their fate. With Max back from injury and Dan Recaldin revelling in the attacking midfield role South started brightly and led 2-0 through early goals from Max and Tom. Players however looked dangerous on the break and quickly pulled a goal back, before Dan went on a mazey run and finished with aplomb to restore the two goal cushion. This was short lived, as Players quickly got back on level terms and the teams went into the half at 3-3.

South came out from the break intent on ensuring the post game refreshment would be everybody refreshing their phones. They quickly moved into a 6-3 lead with Tom grabbing two goals to complete his first hat trick for South, either side of Max getting his second. Players pulled one back with a fine solo goal before Mike got his name on the scoresheet to ensure he didn’t get outscored by Tom for the season. A fantastic performance to finish the season, that for three hours as Newark entered the result wrong, seemed like it wasn’t enough.

Unless the league decide to relegate three, the great escape has been pulled off! Record since Christmas of played 12, won 6, drawn 3 and lost 3.  To echo the words of our vice captain “it’s been a privilege”.  See you next season, who knows maybe a title push.
